Governments fear the power of their own people in our increasingly open and inclusive world, and censorship is a constant background threat to our freedom of speech. Marc Ecko released a grainy-looking video, in which three graffiti artists tagged the US president’s 747 with the slogan “Still Free.” The video was later revealed to be a hoax, but the idea demonstrated how easy it is to create fake news and inspire people to fight for their freedoms.

The video went viral and was picked up by over 3500 websites and 17,000 global news outlets in the first week. There were over 23 million visits to stillfree.com in the first week with over 115 million views to date.
